Jade & Velvet
How we got here
Established in September 2010, Jade & Velvet is the brainchild of Susan Louw and Magda Malan, two entrepreneurs who met through their previous ventures and went on to realise their shared dream of building a thriving business that would create job opportunities and give back to the community it serves. When their paths crossed Magda was manufacturing a line of children's wear and Susan stood at the helm of a lingerie and sleepwear range. They recognised a gap in the market for sophisticated, ladies' wear at reasonable prices and within four months of launching Choc’late Lace in November 2008 they moved out of their respective basements to pursue the business fulltime. Choc’late Lace is their wholesale business venture and Jade & Velvet stemmed from this foundation.
Where we are today
Today Jade & Velvet has three exclusive retail outlets countrywide. The business employs a workforce of 40+ individuals who all work towards producing and distributing the range of flattering, high quality garments that have become popular throughout South Africa. Susan and Magda believe in staying at the forefront of the market by sourcing all of their fabrics themselves and travel regularly to purchase the fabrics and accessories that inspire their garments. By cutting out the middleman they are able to create a unique range of elegant ladies’ wear that appeals to their discerning target market and keep costs as low as possible, passing on the savings to the consumer.
Where we’re headed
The Jade & Velvet design philosophy will remain rooted in creating elegant, easy-to-wear pieces that flatters the figure and can be combined to create fresh new looks for both daytime and evening events. By staying at the forefront of contemporary manufacturing techniques and taking head of consumer trends and preferences, Magda and Susan hope to grow Jade & Velvet to include another retail outlet, as well as further wholesale stockists (both nationally and abroad). They will also continue to build on the variety of corporate social investment initiatives with which they are involved. These include the FASt Forward Fund, a charity that provides FAS-sufferers with equestrian therapy, as well as personal projects that range from donating clothing for charity events to job creation by means of small recycling initiatives.
